I came across a site today that was racking up over 500 simultaneous processes and causing a slow down on other servers connecting to site and affecting 1000's of users.

A quick and easy fix to prevent this problem is to block the site from accessing your site. They may not even be linking to you but just hotlinking an image or running a program through a process o your site. Either way they are costing you resources, money and slowing down your site, here is how to block them by a command line to add to your .htaccess file.

Read full tutorial here: http://forum.thexyz.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1651

It was always just a matter of time until malware writers started targeting Macs. Until suddenly, time was up–much sooner than expected.

The Flashback Trojan that infected 700,000 Macs at its peak earlier this month represents a rude awakening for Apple users who long believed their computers to be immune from the kind of malicious software that infects PCs. Security researchers know that Macs are no better protected from cybercriminals’ attacks than Windows machines. But for years, it was believed that Apple’s low market share would protect it from online evildoers. Why waste time coding a virus for Apple’s tiny sliver of users when a much vaster sea of vulnerable Windows machines was waiting to be infected and hijacked for click fraud, denial of service attacks or credit card theft?

We have around-the-clock cable news stations, social networks, newswires, bloggers, tweeters, and diggers. Everyone is in PR, and everyone needs a PR person.

That’s exactly why anyone with even a foot in the public eye has to have someone who keeps tabs on their social image, particularly on Twitter. Twitter has been used to break stories, from former N.Y. Rep., Anthony Weiner’s, uh, picture problems, to the death of Osama Bin Laden. It’s fast, it’s organic, and it has a way of letting the truth rise to the top.

Here’s the list for March:

Autocomplete with math symbols. [launch codename "Blackboard", project codename "Suggest"] When we process queries to return predictions in autocomplete, we generally normalize them to match more relevant predictions in our database. This change incorporates several characters that were previously normalized: “+”, “-”, “*”, “/”, “^”, “(“, “)”, and “=”. This should make it easier to search for popular equations, for example [e = mc2] or [y = mx+b].

Improvements to handling of symbols for indexing. [launch codename "Deep Maroon"] We generally ignore punctuation symbols in queries. Based on analysis of our query stream, we’ve now started to index the following heavily used symbols: “%”, “$”, “”, “.”, “@”, “#”, and “+”. We’ll continue to index more symbols as usage warrants.

Better scoring of news groupings. [launch codename "avenger_2"] News results on Google are organized into groups that are about the same story. We have scoring systems to determine the ordering of these groups for a given query. This subtle change slightly improves our scoring system, leading to better ranking of news clusters.

You already know how to keep messages private: you just encrypt the contents using a password. But although this kind of technology has been freely available to PC users since Phil Zimmermann launched PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) in 1991, hardly anyone uses it. The benefits of email and online messaging are that they are fast and relatively frictionless – you don't need to address an envelope, find a stamp, walk to a post box and so on – and encryption becomes an annoyance.

The problem with the latest government attempts at snooping is that they are not concerned with the content of messages, but their existence. If you have found some suspected criminals or terrorists, then you will want to know who their friends are: the people they email or message most frequently. Each of these people can probably be identified by their internet protocol (IP) address: the number assigned by their ISP (internet service provider). Even an encrypted email will usually include the addresses of the sender and the recipient in its headers.

In the end, the simplest way to increase your privacy and security is to restrict your internet use to sites and services that have SSL connections. These are already standard for banks and shopping sites, and are increasingly used for email and other purposes. You can recognise them by the s for secure in their https: addresses, and a padlock visible in the browser. The next step is to use the InPrivate, Incognito or Private Browsing feature of your web browser to use anonymous online services.

It is worth noting that Thexyz email services now come with SSL on all premium accounts: http://thexyz.com/email/
