Argentina has become the first country in Latin America to legalise gay marriage after the Senate voted in favour.

The country's Chamber of Deputies had already approved the legislation.

The vote in the Senate, which backed the bill by just six votes, came after 14 hours of at times heated debate.

Police in Toronto fired tear gas on protesters for a second straight day as new violence surrounding the G20 summit erupted and the arrest tally climbed above 500.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Toronto to demonstrate against the twin G8 and G20 summits.

Spokeswoman Maryam Adrangi said police were rounding people up when they went to the detention centre to try to find their friends.

“We are finding police are meeting them there with brutality,” she said. “They are circling groups of people in smaller groups. We have seen plainclothes officers snatching people and throwing them into cars.”
